Smells like summer

Posted in Uncategorized by Benjamin Ng on May 28, 2010

Summer has finally crept around the corner – rid of all the stress of exams and term papers. Finally, we have free time, amongst all the ‘free’ time everyone already had. Plans for the summer, anyone?

Well, right now I’m watching Amy play the Kingdom Hearts II on the PS2. We collectively bought a PS2 with 5 games, all of them being under $10 – Vice City, Devil May Cry, Soul Caliber III, and Resident Evil 4 being the other ones. Pretty good deal right? When school was in session, every second of free time we had was spent on cracking books open, stressing out about term papers and exams. Now, we’ve decided to nostalge for the summer, and do what most find mundane, but rare to me and Amy – to play video games! We give Sebastian the second PS2 controller most of the time so he feels like he’s playing with us. When it comes to the Wii, he has a complete ball with that. He loves to play Wii sports and Mario Kart too; you know, with the driving wheel and everything!

But don’t worry, we’re not spending our whole summer being couch potatos with square eyes. We’ve been spending more or less every day at our apartment pool, basking in the sun, swimming, floating around playing with Sebastian. I always compared the idea to birds swimming in garden fountains. In fact, a few days ago me, Amy and Amy’s friend Brandon went to Blue Bayou/Dixie Landin’, a waterpark and an amusement park built into one! Most famous for it’s purple and yellow tornado slide – Akura – that can be seen by the side of the interstate. A summer hit for our mammal bodies to bask in the various water activities! The most life-threateningly entertaining slide was probably Lafitte’s Plunge: a body water slide that slowly rumbles you towards the edge in total darkness; and then, a sudden 90 degree angle drop. My body was literally riding on the water on not the slide, with my left leg dangling off to the side. Somehow, I managed to stay alive, and after brushing the water off my face with my hands, I picked up my heart from the floor and felt the intense need to ride it again.

After a full day of enjoying the waterslides, we only decided to go on two of the rides at Dixielandin’ – after all, it’s just as much exhilaration as Blue Bayou, and our excitement gauge was pretty much overfilling. Now, think of a normal log flume ride, and how the end has a large drop. Double that. This thing dropped 25 feet right away, and then 50 right at the end. T’was a good thing that I took my shoes off before I rode, my Tom’s smell bad enough as it is. The next and last ride we went on was the Ragin’ Cajun. The ride itself isn’t that long itself, but there are so many loops and hoops, throwing you 3.4 G’s at 14 stories high. It’s hard to keep your eyes open, I promise you. A nice end to the evening was to have a small dinner in a small but traditional, simple and atmospheric sushi bar with Amy’s friend Rachel + her friends, and watching Freddy Got Fingered on her DIY home theatre.

Pre-Blue Bayou, we went to get Sebastian’s passport. It’s official, me, Amy and Sebastian have bought the tickets and have all the necessary documents to visit England for two weeks. We’ll be arriving on the 29th June early afternoon, after a gruelling 13 hour plane ride. We’re staying until the 14th July, and since all the Derbyshire cottages are all booked up, I happen to have a lot of free time now. My mum suggests Legoland and Chessington, which are both very good ideas.  I think we might also stay a night in London too, to take Sebastian to the zoo, Camden market and Hamley’s – the biggest toy shop in the world, stretching up to something like 7 levels, if I remember correctly. Sebastian should have plenty of fun with that!

Well folks, we look forward to seeing you Brits in the near future, and until then, Cheerio~
